Representative Paul LoscoccoEighth Middlesex District's Current State RepresentativeI am extremely pleased to endorse Dan Haley for our next State Representative to the Massachusetts Legislature. Dan is an extremely bright, capable, and energetic person who will work tirelessly to represent the interests of all our communities with integrity and independence. He is a person of ideas and he has a tremendous wealth of experience in the political realm, the governmental realm, and also in his professional life. He is going to be a tremendous asset to this district. |
The Legislature's institutional shortcomings stem in part from its domination by Democrats. There are just 19 Republicans in the 160-member House and five in the 40-member Senate. Unchecked power leads to arrogance, secrecy and cronyism. Taking care of friends and allies becomes more important than accountability and oversight.
Fixing Beacon Hill will require, among other things, more Republicans. A vigorous opposition party can open the process, present alternatives and help ensure proposals are debated, not just gaveled through. It takes five senators to force a roll call vote, the minimum requirement for accountability, and 16 representatives. That could be lost in a Democratic sweep on Nov. 4.
The race to succeed Republican Rep. Paul Loscocco features two attractive candidates. Democrat Carolyn Dykema, a Holliston Planning Board member, would be another fine voice in a large Democratic chorus. Our scale tips to Republican DAN HALEY, former chief of staff to Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, who has a keen eye for how Beacon Hill works and good ideas on how a moderate Republican can serve both the district and the state.
On the House side, meanwhile, the Herald recommends Republican Dan Haley of Holliston to replace outgoing Rep. Paul Loscocco in the Eight Middlesex district. While serving as a lawyer in the Romney administration Haley, former chief of staff to Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, drafted the anti-drunk driving bill that became Melanie's Law. A lawyer in private practice he understands the State House better than another freshman rep might and has pledged to fight the closed-door culture that plagues Beacon Hill.
Voters in the 8th Middlesex District will choose between two Holliston candidates with solid credentials. We give the edge to Republican Dan Haley, who has staked out a clear position against increased taxation and pledges to bring an independent, business-friendly and fiscally responsible voice to Boston. His experiences as a campaign worker in Washington and special assistant district attorney in Middlesex County also bode well for his ability to tackle entrenched bureaucracies.

I always get far too much credit for Melanie's Law. There were so many people working behind the scenes who did so much. And Dan Haley was principal among them. After all, he wrote Melanie's Law. When he worked as the Governor's Deputy Legal Counsel as we fought for Melanie's Law, it was Dan who answered every question, researched every aspect of existing law, and then gave me the tools to answer every legislator and every media question. He was intensely passionate about doing the right thing, never backing down from a challenge and finding a way around every roadblock. Dan is principled, hard working and genuine. I can't think of a better man to represent the 8th Middlesex District.
Massachusetts residents are all too familiar with the closed-door culture on Beacon Hill and they deserve a representative who will champion open government and fiscal responsibility. During my time as Lieutenant Governor Dan was one of my most valued and trusted advisors. He was the principal author of Melanie's Bill and a key player in the successful fight to turn it into Melanie's Law, which has saved an untold number of lives on our roadways since it was enacted. He was also a key behind-the-scenes player in the 2005 battle against a huge retroactive tax hike on capital gains. Dan is smart, effective and passionate, with a proven record of reaching across party lines to fight for real reform. He will bring a fresh, much-needed perspective to the State House at a time when we need leadership to solve some of the serious problems facing our communities.
Dan is one of the most impressive candidates for State Representative that I have seen in many years, and I am proud to support his candidacy. Having worked closely with Dan, I know that the Commonwealth will be well served by his intelligence, dedication, and experience in both the public and private sectors. Dan will make an excellent addition to the Massachusetts Legislature.
Please allow me to share my thoughts on the best candidate to serve the citizens of the 8th Middlesex District going forward. As a Selectman in Hopkinton I am keenly aware of the need for a strong, independent voice on Beacon Hill. Paul Loscocco served us well over the last eight years in a bipartisan manner. Dan Haley will do the same.
Dan is a proven commodity. Dan will represent us with energy, enthusiasm and a full understanding of how to navigate the halls of the State House. Dan appreciates the financial burdens families must tackle each day and will keep those struggles in front of him as he deliberates on our behalf. Dan is a pragmatic leader who speaks plainly about the challenges our district and state face. Dan will continue the common sense approach to government that Paul Loscocco employed as our State Representative.
Due to the unbalanced nature of the Legislature it is imperative that Dan Haley replace Paul Loscocco as our next State Representative. Dan will immediately participate at the highest levels of government on the many committees and legislative panels available only to the minority party. House Rules require that the minority party be given seats at the table on the various committees that draft and mold legislation. In an unbalanced form of government, this is one clear means for new legislators to quickly gain access to the process. Our district needs this visibility. Just as Paul Loscocco did eight years ago, Dan will jump right in!
Dan will provide a strong, independent voice in the Legislature to control state spending on wasteful programs and to focus resources on local aid, public education, and policies that encourage local business development and job growth.
With experience working in the Governor’s office, Dan has first-hand knowledge of how state government works. He won’t be on a learning curve, nor will he be beholden to the power brokers on Beacon Hill. Dan knows how to navigate the political crosscurrents to get things done and he will stand up for what’s important and what’s right for our district.
I have been a member of the Hopkinton School Committee for the past eleven years and counting. During this time, I have been a strong advocate for public education as the best investment that a community can make, and I have pushed hard for efficiency in how local government spends taxpayers’ money.
I have gotten to know Dan Haley over the past several months, and I am certain that he will fight for responsible, prioritized spending at the state level and will champion funding for our pubic schools as his top spending priority. Dan is also committed to fostering responsible local business development as a way to lighten the tax burden on homeowners.
Dan will build on the legacy of Paul Loscocco and continue to have state government make a difference in the lives of everyday folks.
Don't we need change on Beacon Hill too? Don't we need many different voices ensuring that checks and balances guide the process?
Next Tuesday , I will be voting for change on many levels.
One such vote will be for Dan Haley for 8th Middlesex State Representative.
